Morbic 12 - Proteus

Boat profile: Morbic 12 - Proteus (Paul Waterman / Robin Popham)

Veterans Paul Waterman and Robin Popham built a Morbic 12 for the 2020 Dorestad but were held up by travel restrictions. They plan to participate in the Raid Extreme as a warming up event for the 2021 Dorestad Raid.

Which design did you build?

We built a Morbic 12 from a kit supplied by Jordan Boats. The Morbic is a twelve footer designed by Francois Vivier.
We also set up a website for Morbic Owners.
There is also a page dedicated to our build project
Plus a launching video

How did  you build it?

We built our boat mainly between March 2020 and September 2020 in South Oxfordshire.
Because of the lockdown, wehad to split the work, so one of us built the hull in his garage while the other built the mast, spars and a multitude in his garden.

The hull was built from clinker ply, the spars from spruce.

Why did you choose the name Proteus?

The name was inspired by the shape-shifting nature of our craft - Lug to Sloop-Lug rig.
Shape shifting is a characteristic attributed to Proteus the Greek god of rivers and oceanic bodies of water.

So you are all set for the Raid Extreme?

Yes. we believe better things are to come in 2021. We are also looking forward to Dorestad Raid, which we had to miss last year. It is one of my favourite events, and an excellent climax in the Raiding calendar!
